Food For Thought:  Having A “No Shoe” Home Rule

So I just recently completed a video sharing a chit chat session on the issue of wearing shoes in the home.  I have a “No Shoe” home and I wanted to share some tips that have worked for me in maintaining a shoe free home along with tips on how to handle informing guest on removing their shoes when they enter your home.  I hope you will enjoy the video.

Making my home shoe free has been on my mind a while and now I’m ready to implement your ideas. Please show us what the shoe cabinet at your door looks like. I’m a visual girl! Love all of your videos.

Hi Nikki, i enjoyed the video. I grew up with not wearing shoes in our home and removing them when visiting, in fact all my family and friends follow this rule, its out of respect of the homeowner and it helps keep our own homes clean. Thanx for sharing 🙂

I find it so interesting that having a shoe-free home is such an issue for some people. Being from Canada, most people automatically take off their shoes as soon as they enter your home and consider it rude not to do so. I guess it’s just is they way we were brought up. The fact that right now there is also 3 inches of snow outside my door contributes to shoe or boot removal, since no one would think to walk through a house with wet snowy footwear.
I like your hints for keeping a shoe cupboard by the front door and especially about shoe covers for servicemen working in your home.
I love your videos and enjoy looking at your beautiful home and all the great decorating tips you present.
    Take care.

I read somewhere that it is not so much the germs that you should worry about, but the chemicals, e.g. from exhaust fumes, that are covering the ground invisibly. You can cut the amount of bad chemicals in your home in half, just by taking off your shoes!

Hi Nikki, in our car we have a thanks for not smoking note, so we did the same for our front door, welcome and thanks for removing your shoes.
job done everyone automatically does it as soon as they come in and i have a basket with a lid just inside the entry labelled . guest slippers please help yourself, full of cheap ikea slippers that i can machine wash freshly. I also bought slippers for my famiy to keep at my home and casually mention to regular visitors that when they buy new slippers bring thier old pair to keep at my home in the slipper closet. what do you think?

    • Kathy says:

Susan, I think your idea about frequent guests keeping a pair of slippers at your house is brilliant. That is sure to make people more comfortable taking off their shoes in the house.

  6. I am from Barbados and this is done in ALL homes there, its just a rule that everyone knows. I was really shocked when I moved here that everyone doesn’t do this!

Hi Nikki.. As you can see we are a Japanese household and we have always had a no shoe rule… Most people that come to our home know this and are prepared.. My sisters keep their slippers in their cars just for visiting.. On our Big party days..Christmas,Thanksgiving, Easter it is mostly family.. THEY know how to remove their shoes.. .. Last Summer we had a big swim party for our great grandson’s first birthday.. LOTS AND LOTS of people going in and out , 50 or more people we were meeting for the first time… at these times we just perpare ourselves for the disinfecting of the floors the following day.. I have hardwood bamboo floors and tile elsewhere so this is fine with us.. Our bedrooms are carpeted but they are not in the traffic area.. When I did have carpet I just used to have the carpet cleaned after the party. As you can see I am a GREATgrandmother so we have delt with this for years.. Most people after one visit know the rules and appreciate and respect your home.. All and all it isn’t that hard to say please take them off.. I wish I had room for a shoe cabinet.. ours are on a rug next to the door and that is that.. I do have live in family carry their extra shoes to their own closets for storage.
