The Unexpected Rule That Keeps Shoes from Taking Over My Entryway

In the stage of life we’re in right now, having shoes by the door just makes sense.

Between taking our pups Bentley and Albert out several times a day, stepping out to sit on the porch to enjoy a cuppa, checking the mail, or Mike running the trash out… we’re constantly in and out of the house. And let’s be honest, walking all the way to another room every single time just isn’t practical.

So yes, shoes by the door are a convenience.

But here’s the thing…

That same convenience can very quickly turn into clutter.

And honestly, there are so many beautiful solutions out there, like a cute basket for shoes or a bench with hidden storage. And while those work wonderfully for some, I found myself wanting something even simpler.

Because what I’ve noticed is that those types of solutions can sometimes encourage accumulation. When there’s extra space, it’s easy for shoes to just keep getting added, piled in a basket, or tucked into a bench, until, before you know it, it feels overwhelming and a bit out of control.

I wanted something that felt more limiting in the best way… something that naturally kept things in check without the constant need to edit it.

Because when you’re heading out quickly, you don’t want to:

• Dig through a basket
• Lift a lid
• Or go searching for your shoes

And if I’m being honest… at this stage, anything that helps me avoid bending down unnecessarily is a win :).

You want to simply slide in your shoes and go.

That’s when I realized… the answer wasn’t just about where to store the shoes.

It was about creating a system that honored convenience, simplicity, and beauty, and still felt like it truly belonged in my entryway.

The Home Shoe

Instead of everyone keeping all of their everyday shoes by the door, we created something a little more intentional in our home….

✨ The Home Shoe ✨

Each person has one designated shoe that lives right at the door.

They’re all the same style, and their purpose is for those quick in-and-out moments at home.

Not multiple options.

Not “just this extra pair.”

Just one beautifully intentional shoe that belongs to the space.

Why This Works So Well

When every shoe by the door is different, tennis shoes, work shoes, flats, boots, it instantly creates visual clutter.

But when they’re all the same style?

Everything feels:

• Calmer
• More cohesive
• More intentional

We chose a simple outdoor slip-on style that we can wear in any weather. They’re easy to clean, easy to slide into, and they come in multiple colors.

The specific pair we chose for our home shoe is the Bass Outdoor, and I truly recommend them. They check all the boxes when it comes to function and ease, which is exactly what you want for something you’ll be reaching for throughout the day.

And one thing I highly recommend is choosing colors that coordinate with your existing entryway decor or keeping them within a neutral palette. It’s a small detail, but it makes such a difference in reducing visual clutter and helping the shoes feel like they truly belong in the space.

For example, Mike has a navy blue pair, and I have a yellow pair, both colors that are already reflected in our entryway, so everything feels cohesive without even trying.

Either way, the goal is the same: reduce the visual noise and elevate the space.

The Detail That Made It Beautiful

Now this is where it all came together for me…

Mike built a custom shoe tray for us, and instead of just leaving it functional, we made it beautiful.

We stained it a rich blue (Minwax premium water-based, semi-transparent wood finish color stain). We had Lowe’s tint it in the color Denim Blue MW1070 to complement our entryway, and I purchased beautiful personalized engraved gold nameplates from Things Remembered, one for him and one for me.

Each shoe now has a designated place to land.

And what was once just “a spot for shoes” now feels like a curated, intentional moment in our home.

If you have a larger family, you can simply extend the tray and create a space for each person. It becomes not only practical, but something that truly adds to the space instead of taking away from it.

No DIY? No Problem

If building a tray isn’t your thing, you can absolutely recreate this in a simpler way.

Find a tray that fits your space and your shoes well, and then elevate it with personalized plaques. The key is to make sure the tray fits the shoes just right, not too big, not too small

Because when there’s extra space, it invites extra clutter.

And the goal here is to be intentional.

Make It a Family Moment

One of the reasons this system works so well is because it’s something we did together.

When you involve your family, letting them choose their shoe color, be part of setting up the tray, or even just seeing their nameplate, it creates a sense of ownership.

And when people feel connected to a system, they’re much more likely to maintain it

The Shift

I’ve come to realize something about our entryway…

Your first impression space (aka entryway) deserves intention, not overflow.

And once I embraced that, everything changed.

It wasn’t about removing the shoes. It was about refining them.

Your Simple Reset

If shoe clutter has been a frustration in your home, here’s a simple way to reset:

✔️ One designated home shoe per person
✔️ Same style for a cohesive look
✔️ A beautiful, intentional place for them to live
✔️ Remove extra space that invites clutter
✔️ Involve your family in the process

Because at the end of the day, your entryway is more than just a pass-through space…

It’s the first impression of your home.

And it deserves intention, not overflow.

Happy Organizing,
Nikki
