There’s something about an appliance cabinet that quietly tells the story of your current season of life.
Mine recently told me… “Ma’am, we need to talk.”
I had spotted a new small appliance that I wanted to bring into the kitchen, and naturally, I did what most of us do. I opened the cabinet and started mentally shifting things around like a game of Tetris, trying to convince myself I still had room. But the deeper I dug into the cabinet, the more I realized the issue wasn’t really space.
It was that some of my appliances had simply expired for this version of my life.
And listen… that realization was oddly emotional.
I pulled out my bread maker, and whew. That thing has been with me for years. Honestly, probably 15–16 years… maybe longer. At this point, it deserves a retirement party and a standing ovation.
I even snapped a photo touching it because it truly felt like I was saying goodbye to an old friend. 😂
But as I looked at it sitting on my countertop, I realized something important: appliances evolve just like our lifestyles do.
Bread makers today are smaller. Lighter. More efficient. Easier to store. And as a woman of a particular age, let me just say this lovingly… if an appliance feels like I’m strength training every time I pull it out, it may no longer fit the lifestyle I want in this season.
The same thing happened with my air fryer.
Both my bread maker and air fryer are older models, and both are BIG. Like “taking up valuable real estate” big. So instead of continuing to wrestle with oversized appliances that no longer fit my lifestyle, I decided I’m going to sell them and use that money toward updated versions that work better for how I live now.
And honestly? That’s one of my favorite home organization tips when updating your space.
Sell the old thing first.
One man’s trash really is another man’s treasure.
I learned this years ago as a military spouse. Every time we moved, I would declutter before packing and sell the items we no longer needed. Then I’d take that money and create a little “new home fund” to help set up our next space beautifully. It made transitions easier, kept clutter under control, and helped us refresh our home without overspending.
That little habit has stayed with me ever since.
So now, instead of cramming more into my appliance cabinet, I’m reassessing it. Curating it. Making sure it reflects my current lifestyle instead of who I was ten years ago.
And if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by your kitchen appliances lately, here are a few tips that have helped me tremendously:
First, try to keep all of your small appliances in one designated area whenever possible. Whether it’s a lower kitchen cabinet, a pantry shelf, or a dedicated appliance cabinet, grouping them together makes life so much easier. You can quickly see what you own, maintain the area more easily, and avoid buying duplicates because everything is visible in one place.
It also saves time because you’re not hunting all over the house for appliances. There’s one “home” for them.
Another thing to consider is placement. Heavier appliances should always live at waist level if possible. Your back should not have to negotiate with your slow cooker every time you want chili.
Trust me on this one. 😂
I also highly recommend using baskets inside appliance cabinets, especially for all those little accessories that somehow multiply overnight.

Air fryer liners. Attachments. Electrical cords. Specialty lids. Measuring scoops. Tiny random pieces we believe we’ll remember the purpose of later.
Baskets help corral all of it beautifully.

And another organizing trick? Store appliance accessories inside the appliance whenever possible. If your mixer has attachments, place them inside the mixing bowl. If your bread maker has measuring tools or recipe booklets, tuck them directly inside the machine. Keeping things together reduces clutter and makes using the appliance easier.

Also, being intentional when shopping new appliances, look for appliances that recognize the importance of designing a space for cord storage. Cords will immediately make a cabinet look messy.
Now let’s talk about deep cabinets for a moment.
Deep cabinets can either become beautifully organized… or a black hole where appliance accessories disappear forever. There is no in-between.
This is why I love square baskets for appliance storage.
Square baskets maximize space so well, especially in deeper cabinets where traditional bins waste room. You can often fit four baskets across a shelf, instantly creating organized zones within the cabinet.
For example:
Suddenly that deep cabinet feels intentional instead of chaotic.
And perhaps the biggest lesson I’m learning lately is this: organization isn’t just about fitting more into your home. It’s about making sure your home still fits you.
Your routines change.
Your energy changes.
Your cooking habits change.
Your lifestyle evolves.
And your home should evolve beautifully alongside you.
Happy Organizing,
Nikki
