A Beautifully Organized Kitchen, One Drawer at a Time: The Linen Drawer

There’s a drawer in my kitchen that I open almost every single day.

Not because it’s the most exciting drawer… Not because it holds anything fancy…

The Orderly is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

But because every time I open it, it quietly does something for me.

It makes me feel good.

And I don’t say that lightly.

Because here’s what I’ve learned over the years, especially as a professional organizer and as a woman who simply wants her home to feel like a soft place to land…

Beauty and function should never be separated. They work together. They support each other.

And yes, even in something as simple as a kitchen linen drawer.

It Started With Giving the Drawer a Purpose

One of the very first things I believe in when organizing a kitchen is this:

Every drawer needs a name.

Not necessarily a label on the outside… but a clear identity.

Because when a space has a purpose, it has boundaries. And when it has boundaries, it becomes easier to maintain.

This drawer in my kitchen has a clear role: “Kitchen Linens.”

And everything inside of it has to honor that.

The Three Types of Towels I Always Keep

Now, let’s talk about what lives inside.

Because I don’t just toss towels into a drawer and call it a day…

I categorize them.

And this is where the magic really begins.

1. My Everyday Workhorse Towels

These are my utility towels.

The ones I reach for without thinking: drying dishes, grabbing a hot pot, wiping hands while cooking.

They’re thicker, more absorbent, and they get the most use.

2. My Tea Towels (the quiet multitaskers)

These are my lighter, thinner towels, many of them Turkish-style.

And they serve a completely different purpose.

● Draped over rising dough

● Wrapped around fresh bread

● Styled on my coffee bar

● Used when I want something softer and more refined

They’re simple… but so versatile.

3. My Entertaining Towels (the pretty ones)

These are the ones that come out when guests are over.

The ones I place beside a tray… Or near wine glasses… Or out where they can quietly elevate the moment.

And tucked beneath them?

My seasonal towels.

Because here’s one place where I do stack…

Seasonal items and spares.

If it’s something I only use occasionally, like holiday towels or backup pieces, I’ll place those underneath. I know they’re there, and I’m not reaching for them often, so it makes sense.

The Folding Method That Changes Everything

Now let me tell you something that made a huge difference for me…

I don’t fold my towels individually.

Because when you do that, especially with different brands and sizes, you end up with uneven stacks.

And visually? It feels a little chaotic.

Instead, I:

● Fold each towel lengthwise first

● Stack them together so they’re all the same width

● Then do a simple fold over

This gives me that clean, uniform look.

And then I place them standing upright in a bamboo drawer bin (mine is from IKEA).

Like little file folders.

So when I open the drawer, I can see everything at once.

Why I Don’t Stack (Most of the Time)

Stacking may seem neat…

But it hides things.

And when we can’t see what we have, we tend to forget, overbuy, or create clutter without realizing it.

Now, like I mentioned earlier, the exception is seasonal items and spares.

Those can live underneath because you’re accessing them intentionally and infrequently.

But for your everyday items?

Let them stand.

Let them be seen.

Because when your drawer becomes visual inventory, everything changes.

A Little Personality Goes a Long Way

One of my favorite little details in this drawer?

My bowl covers.

And I want to be clear, there’s nothing fancy happening here.

They’re round with elastic, so all I do is fold them into quarters…

And when you stand them upright?

They naturally look like little flowers.

That’s it.

No special technique. Just a simple fold that gives a soft, beautiful look.

And I love incorporating little touches like that, because even inside a drawer…

you deserve a bit of joy.

The Supporting Pieces I Keep Nearby

Also in this drawer:

Oven Mitts & Mats

I love my silicone ones from KitchenAid, they’re durable, easy to wipe down, and they’ve lasted me for years.

And another thing I love?

They come in so many beautiful colors… which means even your functional pieces can still feel elevated and on brand in your home.

The Double Oven Mitt (a little story here…)

The first time I ever saw a double oven mitt was when I was living in England.

And I remember thinking… where has this been all my life?

The very first thing I did?

I went out and got one for my mom.

Because once you use it, you understand.

It protects both hands and your forearms, especially when you’re pulling out those heavier dishes like a big lasagna pan.

And it’s so much easier than trying to manage two separate mitts.

A Spare Apron

Because cooking is often a shared moment.

Whether it’s family visiting or someone jumping in to help, it’s always nice to have an extra on hand.

My Linen Drawstring Bag

This holds all of my specialty baking linens:

● Baguette bags

● Sourdough covers

● Linen wraps

It keeps everything contained, clean, and easy to access.

Dish Drying Mat (a quiet essential)

Another piece I keep tucked into this drawer is my dish drying mat, the one I use when I’m hand washing dishes.

It’s one of those items that doesn’t always get talked about, but it plays such an important role in the day-to-day flow of the kitchen.

I simply fold it neatly, nothing complicated, and place it in its own space within the drawer so it’s easy to grab when I need it and just as easy to put away once it’s dry.

And I love that it lives here with my linens, because it keeps everything that supports that “clean and reset” moment in one place.

What You Won’t Find in This Drawer

Now here’s something that might surprise you…

I don’t keep dishcloths in here.

Instead, I store them under my sink, where I actually use them.

And my favorite?

A good crochet dishcloth. Durable, slightly textured, and perfect for scrubbing. (I’ll link my favorites for you, you’re going to love them.)

Knowing When to Let Go

This part matters.

If a towel is heavily stained, torn, or worn out… it’s time.

Now, if it’s a light stain? You can absolutely continue to use it for a bit.

But when it’s beyond that point, letting it go keeps your space feeling fresh and intentional.

And a beautiful way to repurpose them?

Donate them to animal shelters, they truly put them to good use.

Your Mini Win This Week

If you’ve been looking for a place to start…

This is it.

Your kitchen linen drawer.

And I want to gently remind you, this is not about perfection.

It’s about creating a space that:

● Helps you see what you have

● Makes it easy to access what you need

● Supports simple, everyday function

And yes… brings a sense of beautiful order into your home.

Start small.

Create your categories. Fold with intention. Give everything a home.

And then notice how it feels the next time you open that drawer.

Because those little moments?

They add up.

And that’s what a beautifully organized life is all about.

If you try this, I would truly love to hear what’s one change that made the biggest difference for you?

With love,

Nikki
