One of the Most Loving Things You Can Organize

Our pantry.

Our closets.

Our paperwork.

And then there are the things we organize because they become one of the greatest gifts we can leave behind.

For years, I’ve taught that organization isn’t about having a picture-perfect home.

It’s about creating peace.

It’s about making life easier for the people we love.

And perhaps there’s no greater example of that than preparing for the unexpected.

Two Families I’ll Never Forget

Over the years, I’ve witnessed two very different stories.

The first happened while I was sitting in the hospital with a dear friend whose brother was in the ICU.

As I waited in the lobby, another family had just experienced the loss of someone they loved.

A young woman—probably in her early twenties—had just lost her mother.

Through tears, she tried to explain to her aunts what her mother had wanted.

Her mom had shared those wishes with her verbally…

…but nothing had ever been written down.

The conversation quickly became an argument.

The daughter was trying to honor her mother’s wishes while also respecting her family, who believed something different should happen.

Eventually, hospital administration had to step in.

I’ll never forget the look on that young woman’s face.

She wasn’t only grieving her mother.

She was carrying the weight of trying to defend her mother’s wishes during one of the hardest moments of her life.

The second story looked completely different.

Years earlier, a coworker’s mother passed away.

Of course, my friend was heartbroken.

But there was also an incredible sense of peace.

Her mother had prepared everything.

She documented where important papers were kept.

She listed passwords.

She explained insurance information.

She even wrote down what she wanted to wear, how she wanted things handled, and the little details only she would know.

Instead of searching through drawers and wondering what to do next…

My friend was able to spend her time grieving, remembering, and celebrating her mother’s life.

That story has stayed with me ever since.

Why I Created the Beautifully Organized Estate Planner

Those two experiences planted a seed that eventually became the Beautifully Organized Estate Planner.

Not because I’m an estate attorney.

I’m not.

And not because I’m a financial planner.

I’m not that either.

I created it because…

I’m an organizer.

I know the peace that comes when information has a home.

I also know how overwhelming life becomes when it doesn’t.

This Planner Isn’t a Legal Document

One thing I always want people to understand is this:

This planner is not intended to replace your will, trust, or other legal documents.

In fact, I always encourage working with qualified attorneys and financial professionals for those important decisions.

Instead…

This planner gives those documents a home.

It helps your loved ones know:

  • Where your will is stored
  • Who your attorney is
  • Where insurance policies are kept
  • Which financial institutions to contact
  • What accounts exist
  • Where important paperwork lives

But that’s only part of the story.

The Information Families Need Immediately

Sometimes the most valuable information isn’t legal at all.

It’s the everyday things only you know.

  • Where are the passwords?
  • Who should be contacted if you own a business?
  • What church do you attend?
  • Which schools do your children attend?
  • Where’s the spare key?
  • Who cares for your pets?
  • Which subscriptions should be canceled?

These are the questions families often face immediately.

Yet they’re rarely written down.

One of the Most Meaningful Projects You’ll Ever Complete

The beautiful part is…

Creating an estate planner doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

In fact, I think it can become one of the most meaningful afternoons you’ll ever spend.

I love turning it into a slow afternoon with:

☕ A cup of coffee

🖊️ Beautiful stationery

🤍 A heart focused on love instead of fear

Because this isn’t really about preparing for death.

It’s about caring for the people you’ll one day leave behind.

A Few Little Things I Love Doing

Protect the work you’ve done.

Once your planner is complete, store it in a fireproof document bag that’s easy for your family to locate.

Use both pen and pencil.

I use pen for information that rarely changes.

Birthdates.

Family history.

Permanent information.

Passwords and account numbers?

Those go in pencil so they’re easy to update.

Leave a little piece of yourself.

One of my favorite ideas…

Lightly mist a page with your signature perfume.

It sounds simple.

But someday that familiar scent may instantly remind someone they love…

of you.

Keep an eraser nearby.

A small eraser with a built-in brush helps keep your planner neat whenever updates are needed.

Write handwritten letters.

One of my favorite additions is writing letters to family members.

Seal them with wax.

Add your family monogram.

Leave behind words they’ll treasure forever.

At the End of the Day…

This planner isn’t really about paperwork.

It’s about love.

It’s about lifting a burden from the shoulders of people who will already be carrying enough.

It’s about replacing confusion…

with clarity.

Replacing stress…

with peace.

Replacing unanswered questions…

with thoughtful preparation.

Because organization has always been about creating a better life.

And sometimes…

it becomes one of the greatest gifts we ever leave behind.

Have you started organizing your important documents? I’d love to hear what’s been most helpful for your family.

Happy Organizing, 🤍

Nikki
