Lately, one of my biggest frustrations has been the produce in the grocery store.
In a recent session with my wellness coach, I found myself venting about something that probably sounds small, but honestly, it has been bothering me for months. It feels like the quality of produce has gotten worse than ever. Time after time, I bring home beautiful-looking fruits and vegetables, only to discover that half the package is spoiled, bruised, or already on its way out.
There is nothing more frustrating than spending money on healthy food and then throwing a portion of it away.
So when farmer’s market season arrived, I was ready.
And let me tell you, it has been bringing me so much joy.
There is something special about walking through rows of fresh produce, talking to the farmers, discovering what was harvested that morning, and filling your bags with food that actually tastes the way it’s supposed to taste. The tomatoes are sweeter. The strawberries are more flavorful. The lettuce is crisp. Even the onions seem more exciting.
In fact, one of my favorite finds on my recent trip was a table stacked high with enormous Vidalia onions. They were absolute showstoppers.
The moment I walked by, they stopped me in my tracks. All I could think about was slicing one thick, tossing it on the grill, and serving it on top of a juicy burger. Sometimes it’s the simplest ingredients that inspire an entire meal.
As I’ve been spending more time at the farmer’s market, I’ve picked up a few tips that have made the experience even better.
A sturdy tote is a must, but I recommend bringing two.
Use one for heavier items like potatoes, onions, squash, and jars. Use the second for delicate produce like peaches, tomatoes, berries, and flowers.
Your produce will thank you later.
This might be my favorite tip.
Before heading out, snap a quick photo of your refrigerator and produce drawers.
It sounds simple, but it helps prevent overbuying and reminds you what you already have at home. When you’re standing in front of gorgeous vegetables, it’s easy to forget you still have lettuce, cucumbers, and peppers waiting to be used.
Farmers’ markets are full of temptation.
Fresh bread. Local honey. Homemade jams. Fresh flowers. Specialty cheeses.
Before you go, decide how much you’d like to spend. Having a budget helps you shop intentionally while still leaving room for a few treats.
If you’re planning to bring home fresh flowers, this little trick makes a huge difference.
A small bucket or basket helps keep bouquets upright during the drive home and prevents stems from getting crushed.
Trust me, your flowers will arrive looking just as beautiful as they did at the market.
I learned this lesson the hard way.
On my most recent trip, I purchased strawberries from one vendor early in my visit. They were lovely, so I thought I was making a great choice.
A few minutes later, I came across another booth with even more beautiful strawberries—and better pricing.
Had I done a quick walk-through first, I probably would have waited.
Now I always take a lap around the market before making my purchases. It gives me a chance to compare quality, prices, and discover booths I might otherwise miss.
A cooler bag is especially helpful if you’re purchasing eggs, meats, cheeses, or if you have errands to run after the market.
It keeps everything fresh while giving you flexibility throughout the day.
This tip comes directly from experience.
During my last visit, I walked past a booth selling the most incredible mini donuts. They were coming out hot and fresh, and the smell alone was enough to convince me I needed one.
There was only one problem.
The vendor accepted cash only.
Not cards. Not digital payment.
And of course, I didn’t have enough cash in my purse.
I searched every pocket hoping to find enough change to make it happen, but it simply wasn’t meant to be.
To this day, I’m still thinking about those donuts.
One of the best parts of a farmer’s market is the people.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
A few of my favorites are:
You’ll often walk away with recipe ideas, cooking inspiration, and products you may never have noticed otherwise.
One thing I love about bringing home fresh produce is how easy it makes meal planning.
Especially during spring and summer, one of my favorite dinners is simply a beautiful salad paired with a protein.
Sometimes it’s grilled chicken.
Sometimes it’s grilled pork chops.
Nothing complicated.
Just fresh greens, seasonal vegetables, a simple dressing, and one delicious protein.
It’s easy to prepare, it feels light and nourishing, and it gets the job done.
And honestly, that’s what this season is teaching me.
The simple things really are the beautiful things.
A Saturday morning at the farmer’s market.
A tote bag full of fresh produce.
A vase of flowers on the counter.
A crisp salad for dinner.
These small moments may not seem significant, but they are often the very things that make a home feel beautiful.
And lately, I’ve been soaking up every bit of it.
Hugs and Love,
Nikki
