The Potting Bench I Couldn’t Stop Dreaming About

There’s something so special about creating a space in your home that feels like it was made just for you. And this week, that space finally came to life for me… my dream potting bench.

For the longest time, I had been searching online for one. You know how sometimes you have a vision in your mind that you just cannot shake? That was me with this potting bench. I wanted it to feel charming, collected, beautiful, functional, and timeless. But every bench I came across looked like it had just been folded out of a cardboard box five minutes before delivery. Nothing had character. Nothing felt special.

So finally, around Mother’s Day, I looked at Mike and said, “You know what would make me very happy this year?”

And because this man knows me well… he already knew the answer before I finished the sentence.

I shared my vision with him, the sink, the faucet, the stain color, the little decorative details, the overall feeling I wanted, and little by little, he brought it to life with his own hands. Honestly, watching him build it was one of my favorite parts of the whole experience. I have photos of him out there drilling screws and piecing everything together, and every time I looked outside, it felt like my vision was slowly becoming real.

There’s something deeply meaningful about handmade pieces in a home. They carry a different kind of warmth.

And honestly, I think one of the things I love most about this project is that it was not outrageously expensive to create. We spent right around $280 total on the wood and materials, including screws and sandpaper, and Mike built the entire thing over the course of two weekends. The stain was actually something we already had on hand.

This project reminded me that with vision, patience, and a little creativity, you can create something incredibly special without spending thousands of dollars.

And can we just pause for a moment to appreciate the timing of it all? Because the very same week my potting bench came to life… my hydrangeas bloomed!

Not just one bloom either. They absolutely showed out this year. Full, fluffy, beautiful blooms everywhere. And honestly? It felt like they were celebrating right alongside me. Like the garden itself was saying, “Welcome. We’ve been waiting for this, too.”

…Which is funny considering parts of my garden are still out there fighting for their lives. So now that the potting bench is complete, I guess it’s time for me to start getting the actual garden together to match the vibe. One project at a time over here.

Now one thing about me… if I find a stain color I love, I’m going to use it again and again until further notice.

If you remember a few posts back, when Mike and I made the tray for our shoes, you may remember that beautiful Minwax Denim Blue stain I fell in love with. Well… she made another appearance. And I’m still obsessed with it. It has this beautiful, rich blue look while still allowing the natural wood grain to peek through, which gives everything such warmth and character. It doesn’t feel flat or overly painted. It just feels lived in but fresh… if that makes sense.

Seeing the unfinished wood transform once the stain went on was honestly one of my favorite moments. Suddenly, it no longer looked like “a project.” It looked like my potting bench.

And then came the accessories… which may or may not be my favorite part of any project.

I found the cutest little “Potting Shed” sign on Amazon with simple green lettering that could not fit the vibe more perfectly. I added a towel bar to the front because I wanted an easy place for a cleanup towel while planting. Then I found the cutest little gold outdoor hook for the side to hold my hose. It’s shaped like a tiny bug (I still don’t fully know what kind of bug it is… but we’re rolling with it), and it ended up adding the perfect whimsical touch.

And speaking of the hose… yes, I bought a gold hose because apparently I now coordinate gardening accessories.

But one feature I absolutely knew I wanted from the beginning was a sink. I found the most beautiful vintage-inspired wall-mounted faucet in a brushed gold finish, and I paired it with a simple vessel sink that Mike installed directly into the bench. Since the hose hookup is right beside the patio area, he connected everything so beautifully and efficiently.

Now I can rinse flowers, wash herbs from the potting bench, clean fruits and vegetables from the farmer’s market, water plants, and honestly… even use the space when entertaining outdoors. I love that it’s functional but still beautiful enough that guests can gather around it with drinks while we sit outside in the evenings.

That’s always my favorite kind of home feature… something practical that still feels beautiful.

Right now, the potting bench is living on our back patio, which honestly has been perfect because it’s easy to step outside and use every day. But eventually, my dream is to move it into a beautiful greenhouse someday… one with charm, character, and room for all the pretty little gardening moments I keep dreaming up in my head.

But for now?

This little corner already feels incredibly special.

And maybe that’s the reminder in all of this… sometimes the most meaningful spaces in a home are not the expensive ones or the perfectly finished ones. Sometimes they are simply the spaces created with intention, love, creativity, and a little imagination.

And maybe a coordinated gold hose too. 😂

Hugs & Love,

Nikki
